J Church News for 2007
For previous news see the Archive page. 01 November J Church is no more. Lance Hahn, co-founder, singer, guitarist, songwriter, the embodiment of J Church, died on 21 October 2007 in Austin, TX, from complications arising from his kidney disease. Memorial services are planned in San Fransisco and Austin. San Fransisco - 11/11/07 at the Hemlock
Tavern, from 6pm There are several tribute sites where you can post your memories of Lance and J Church, including LanceHahn.org and lancehahn.blogspot.com, as well as numerous pages on punk message boards. A bunch of labels co-released a J Church and Cringer tribute album earlier this year entitled Let's Do It For Lance. All proceeds so far have gone towards Lance's medical bills, as he had no health insurance. It's not currently clear about the status of the outstanding bills, so if you'd still like to help out - or if you want just to hear a damn fine record - then you can get the CD from Vinehell, No Idea and doubtless other online and real-life record stores.
22 February Not a lot happened with J Church in 2006 due to Lance's illness. If you want to know what happened to him, please read his Myspace page; there won't be any comment on here. For that reason and others, j-church.com was equally dormant. Hopefully that will change now. First of all, here's a catch-up on the things that did happen. 1) The album The Horror Of Life was recorded - as a three-piece band again. It appeared on No Idea's release schedule then disappeared again. It's finally due out in March - see below. 2) Two more of the split singles from the Seishun Zankoku Monogatari came out towards the end of 2006 and as they were split-label releases, both should still be available.
3) No Idea released a DVD of The Fest 3 (which took place in 2005), at which J Church played. It's 3 hours long with 60 bands doing 64 songs. The J Church track is currently unknown. Other bands include Planes Mistaken For Stars, This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb, The Sainte Catherines, True North, and all your other No Idea favourites. Now here's what is forthcoming: 4) the split 7" with Sound on Sound on Underground Communique Records was suppposed to be the split with Hirudin mentioned in January 2006, except that Hirudin broke up then re-formed with a slightly different line-up and a new name. Justin at the label sent me pics of the artwork for this several months ago with the expectation of a 2006 release but obviously it's had to be re-done. 5) The Horror Of Life: yes, the LP / CD is finally going to be out on 13 March 2007 on No Idea and they are taking pre-orders through the site. A page will be up on this site asap. The sixteen tracks are: Vampire Girl Prefers Me Alive, Eric Dolphy, Cosmonaut, If I Have To Dance Then I Don't Want Your Revolution, The Horror of Life, New Ho Chi Minh City, Secular Music, The World's Tiniest Violin, Viva La Muerte, Unrequited, Flirting With The Bourgeois Dream (*), Bande A Part, The Ocean, The King (*), Tomorrow And Forever, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love The two songs marked (*) were previously released on Seishun Zankoku Monogatari but these are new versions. 6) J Church are playing two shows in Austin, at SXSW and at a house party. The first is on Friday March 16 at Red 7 on 611 E 7th, the other is a house party at Ben's house on the 17th. If you know Ben, I guess you'll know where to go... 7) Other planned releases for 2007 include:
